Leadership versus Management
I find it surprising how wide spread the definitions, applications and interpretations are for “Leadership” and “Management”, dependent on whom one communicates with. This is not only the case with these two expressions.
So I think it is instrumental that I provide my definition and interpretation of these two expressions:
I do not claim that my take is the right take, nor that everybody else’s is wrong.
Leadership: I consider it inappropriate that one calls himself “Leader”. I also think that there are no Leadership “Roles”. In my opinion, a Leader is a person that is being followed. With the active part being with the followers. Nothing for the Leader to decide. A Leader is being followed because of earned respect. And this earning of respect is a continuous and permanent event.
Leadership does not require a Management Position or Role. A Management Position or Role does not make a Leader.
Management: This is a role or position that one has. This role brings with it the responsibilities, privileges and authority. This is the necessity and the risk.
